East Riding of Yorkshire Council have delivered an early Christmas present to the Hedon Museum Society in the form of a £6,000 grant from the ‘Love Your High Street’ fund. The funds are to replace and refurbish the windows of the museum, and the projects name is ‘Windows on History’.

2021 has been the 25th Anniversary of the opening of the museum following a determined drive by the people of Hedon that started in the early 1990’s. The years have taken their toll on the fabric of the building and museum trustee Tony Porter says, ‘the grant is very timely for us as the windows in the old Caretakers Cottage part of the museum are rotten and single glazed, and the glazing in the new section needs up dating too. It is great to think that by fixing these defects it will ensure that the museum is here for a further twenty five years at least!’.

The Love Your High Street fund is there to support ideas and projects that will revitalise or repurpose the town centres of the East Riding and is open to businesses,, local councils and community groups. ‘Those at the fund have been extremely helpful, guiding us through the process and assisting in many ways, say the Museum’s Tony Porter.

Hedon Museum, although a fully accredited museum, is run entirely by volunteers. It is closed for the winter but reopens at the beginning of March on Wednesday’s and Saturdays 10am to 4 pm. There are permanent displays as well as changing exhibitions in the upstairs room. This follows on a steady flow of improvements at the museum with the installation of a stair lift and enclosing the porch.

All those at Hedon Museum wish a very Merry Christmas and look forward to welcoming visitors both old and new in the New Year.
